The Dragon Scroll - chapter 6

|| prologue || chapter 1 || chapter 2 || chapter 3 || chapter 4 || chapter 5 ||

Warnings: slightly spooky stuff

Rei sat down at the table as instructed, unable to shake the feeling of awkwardness.

"There is nothing to fear, my dear. Not here, not right now. Right now we're having tea, like old friends. You have a long journey ahead of you. Best relax while you can."

"You know of my journey?" Rei asked, confused, "How do you know?"

"The scroll, my dear. I am bound to it, as it is bound to you."

Rei instinctively put a hand on her thigh, feeling the scroll beneath the smooth cool silk of her kimono.

"Bound to me?"

"Quite literally, at the moment." There was a dry chuckle. "But yes, maybe in more ways than just that one. Time will tell."

As one of the cups floated unsupported through the air, Rei took another small steaming cup from the table. She was quite surprised to find there actually was tea there. She took a sip. It made her feel comfortable and warm, she hadn't felt this calm all day. She smiled.

"Ah yes, tea is a marvelous thing. It warm the heart and lifts the soul. It might even inspire courage. You'll be needing that, if you plan to continue one the road you have picked."

"I will tell you, but first let's make a little more light."

Behind Rei a lantern flickered into life. Rei watched it in awe wondering how that was possible. It made the house look less abandoned, almost like a home.

As she stared at the light, a cold feeling swooped over her, the purple light surrounding her. It was like the temperature dropped several degrees.

"That does make quite a difference, don't you think?"

The voice sounded much closer this time, Rei turned to look at the source of the sound.

"But... You're a ghost!" Rei gasped, staggering backwards. The purple light started to fade, slowly revealing an old man. He looked ancient and was wearing a yukata in a style Rei had never seen before.

"Of course I am, my dear. What else would I be? But we shouldn't worry about things like that. There are more pressing matters that require your attention."

"What do you mean?" Rei asked.

"You took the scroll to keep it safe. But those who were after it will not let you go so easily. I have seen them, they will come."

Rei stood there wondering why she wasn't more scared. She knew she was bound to be followed. All she needed to do was stay one step ahead. If that was possible.

"I know what you're thinking. You will need help. It is a long shot, but it's worth a try. You can ask her for assistance."

Rei looked up to the old man.

"The scroll was bound to her once, just like it could very well be bound to you now. If it is, she'll be willing to help. If it isn't... Well let's not worry about that now."

"I really didn't think that would work," Etsuko said, staring at the unconscious ninja at her feet. "I thought it was way too obvious."

"Yeah, because your plan was so much better..."

"Oh shut up," Etsuko giggled.

"So, now all we have to do is get Daisuke and we're good to go. Where is he anyway?" Etsuko looked around. "You guys are usually joined at the hip."

Hayate's insides turned to ice. He balled his fists to stop them from shaking.

"There's no need to find Daisuke..." he said in a flat voice.

Etsuko laughed.

"Aw come on. Did you guys get in another fight? You guys do that all the time. But you can't just leave him in here, that's kind of cold. Even for you."

Hayate turned away and took a deep breath. He hoped his voice remained steady.

"Etsu... Daisuke... He didn't make it. There was... I... He asked me..." his voice broke.

He heard Estuko cry behind him. He knew he should have turned around, try and comfort her. But he couldn't. It was all he could do to stand there, staring up at the ceiling, blinking fast, as Etsuko's misery echoed off the walls.

"Come, we must go. There is little time."

"Where are we going?" Rei was starting to get annoyed, it seemed all she could do was ask questions.

"You will need to see her. We must go, now."

"No," said Rei, folding her arms. She was hungry, she was tired and this old man, whoever or whatever he was, was getting on her last nerve "Look, I appreciate your help. But I'm not moving an inch until you tell me where we're going and who she is."

The man looked at her and sighed.

"I could tell you, but she could tell you much better. You'll just have to trust, my dear."

Rei froze. She had heard those words before, not so long ago. She nodded slowly, trust had gotten her this far. It was time to trust again, whatever the outcome might be.

They walked in silence, down the sloping hill, deeper and deeper into the forest. Twice the old man stopped, looking around, listening intently. And then he would walk on again. It made Rei nervous, but she decided not to say anything about it.

The forest grew darker, the trees were shielding the light from the moon and stars. It was hard to see where she was going, but the old man seemed to glow in the darkness. It was easy to follow him.

Suddenly the forest was light. Rei blinked and wondered for a moment if they had cleared the forest. Then she saw it. An old rundown gate, like the one in front of the old temple back in Takemizu. There were lights here, the lanterns had lit on their arival.

The old man walked up to the gate.

"I can go no further. Follow the road, it's not far. I hope she'll be able to help you. Good luck, my dear."

+ Chapter 6! According to my notes, that means I'm half way there.
+ The ghost is supposed to be the old wise man you can find in the secret lot in Takemizu. I tried to use the real one. But all he did was practice Tai Chi and meditate.
+ As always, thanks for reading

Oh my gosh, I just got home and I'm having dinner (at my desk >_>). I had to read this update! It's really good. I'm wondering who the old man ghost is leading Rei to.

I really felt for Etsuko here. :( :( :( It seems like she's just a positive person all around and didn't think anything bad could happen to her friends. This story is so wonderful!

Thank you! I know I've said it before, but I'm really glad you like it.
I'm working on that bit of the story right now :)

You're right about Etsuko, the thought of something bad happening to Daisuke (or Hayate and Rei for that matter) would never occur to her.

You always pick the best (and worst because you make me wait :P) places to leave off.

Poor Etsuko D: But she is adorable.

XD you'll find out soon, don't worry
Would you believe I annoy myself with that sometimes? I really wanted to keep on going, but this chapter would have reached an epic length. I had to cut off somewhere and this seemed like the best place to do it.

She is! I never expected to grow this fond of Etsuko, but her face is so expressive. I love that about a sim :)

I especially love the last picture and how you used the old man's ghost and lit up the tea set. Your pictures are really beautiful, and I can't wait to see what happens next!

The forest was actually the first thing I build for this story, I'm excited I can finally use it. I had a load of fun finding the right effect for the old man ghost.
Thank you!

Decided to read this story (all 6 updates of it). All I have to say is excellent decision :)
Your photography is lovely as are your models.
Looking forward to more and the possible model downloads you spoke of.

I'm going to be a broken record, but I really do love this story! I really can't wait for more! This is one of my favorite stories ever. :3

Sha had to find out one way or another and it seemed pointless to keep her in the dark. Still, I felt really sorry for her.

Thank you! She will be featured heavily in the next chapter, you'll find out more about her soon :)

Etsuko :(

I love how you shot the scene with the old man. If I recall correctly the one from the game just has a template face (Remington's maybe?), so it's good that you made him more interesting looking. Good job working with ghosties; I always have trouble making them show-up clear enough.

Who the heck is this SHE?
Keonikeoni_chan on March 23rd, 2012 10:10 pm (UTC)
Thank you!
You're right, the old man is pretty much a template face. I just tweaked it a little to my liking. I'm glad you approve.
I made him a normal colored ghost. Since the way he died is not important for my story, I had some freedom and just picked the one that showed the clearest.

It's been awhile since i left a comment, been lurking and (...patiently) waiting for the next chapter. You just keep everything so suspenseful <3

Poor Hayate, it broke my heart when he had too spill the truth.. the pain, the suffering. (memories of modern history - the Meiji Restoration :d) I always thought Etsuko was such a child, it pains me to see her so sad :/ And now i'm left thinking.. who is that girl???

Yay for being halfway (no for being nearly finished :{
Keonikeoni_chan on March 23rd, 2012 10:16 pm (UTC)
Thank you! I'm so glad you're enjoying it.

Etsuko is a little girl at heart, she has to believe everything will be alright, always. Daisuke dying shows her that not everything always will be alright, that's what;s crushed her the most.

I'm yet sure how long the story will be exactly, originally I had only planned this to be 7 chapters long. It's already twice as long as planned, so I might not be quite as finished as I think :)

Wheeee update! This is just so beautifully shot, as usual. And very intriguing. I loved the scenes in the ruined house, very spooky. Can't wait to see what happens next.

Thank you! I have a lot of fun going through all the game animations, finding faces that work the best for the scenes. I'ts pretty funny to see samurai doing the smutsle XD

Not at all, please feel free :)

Thank you! I felt sorry for Etsuko. I wanted to make Hayate console her in her pain, but I couldn't get him to do the animation. Maybe my game felt that was out of character ;)

Ohmigosh, your woods set! I'm jealous. :)
