The Dragon Scroll - chapter 5

|| prologue || chapter 1 || chapter 2 || chapter 3 || chapter 4 ||

Warnings: violence, slightly spooky stuff

The sun was slowly setting in the west, coloring the forest in an orange tint. Rei liked this time of day, the life in the village seemed to slow down, assuming a more gentle pace. In turn dusk filled her with a feeling of peace. But not today.

She was hungry and tired and her feet were acing. She had tried to locate food, but it was early spring. There were no berries to be found, nor mushrooms nor anything else she could eat. Hayate has once taught her how to set a trap for small animals but she didn't want to resort to that. Not yet anyway.

Dragging her feet, she forced herself on. The other village wasn't far, a three day trip at most if she managed to not get lost. She kept close to the road, checking it every now and then to make sure she was going the right way.

Suddenly the woods opened up. Rei stood there for a moment, blinking in the light of the setting sun.

She stared at the remains of the house. Confused she moved closer, making sure it wasn't a mirage. Rei had never heard of anyone living in the woods. Whatever the house had been, it must have been there for ages.

She made her way over what once must have been the threshold. She moved cautiously, slowly putting one foot in front of the other. The floorboards creaked, but supported her weight. She looked around.

The forest was slowly reclaiming the house. Trees and other foliage were growing through the foundation, half the roof was already gone. She listened for sounds of other inhabitants, but none came.

There was something odd about this place. It felt like she wasn't supposed to be here, yet the feeling wasn't entirely unfriendly. It was like the house was checking her out, giving her the chance to prove that she meant no harm. Regardless, she felt like she was being watched.
Rei shook her head. Ridiculous, she though, there's not a soul around for miles. She reckoned the hunger made her head strange and turned around to leave. Then something caught her eye.

It was a small tea table, like the one her mother had. It looked quite untouched by the forest. Weirder still, a little tea set stood on top of it. It was almost like someone had just set the table, then left to get some snacks out of the kitchen. It was odd, but Rei shrugged. Perhaps what was left of the roof had protected the tea table from the elements.

Next to the tea table was a small corner. There were no plants growing there. It looked sheltered and also covered by what was left of the roof. The floor would not be comfortable, but preferable to the cold forest ground. Rei had found her shelter for the night.

He had watched the sun rise and set from the small window. They had been there at the crack of dawn, the ninja, hardly containing their excitement for another round of interrogation.

Hayate had expected some for of retaliation, maybe some nasty interrogation tactics, to make him pay for cheating them out of a victim. But they had taken Daisuke's body and he hadn't seen anyone for the rest of the day. Which was strange, but not unwelcome.

He kept his mind firmly of Rei for the entire day. Thinking of her gave him the urge to try and break through the walls, desperate to join her on her journey. It was too dangerous, he should have never let her go alone.

Noises came from the other side of the door at the end of the hall. Two voices, a low voice, one of the ninja for sure and another one, which sounded very giggly.

He had pushed Etsuko out of his mind, like he had done with Rei. Worrying about Etsuko's plans was about as useful as worrying about Rei, it bothered him but there was nothing he could do about it.

"So this is your brother?" the ninja said, leasing Etsuko closer to the bars of Hayate's cell.

"Yes," Etsuko said, her voice light and flirty, "I assume he has been a bad boy?" She giggled again and winked at Hayate.

Oh Etsuko, for the love of...

The ninja nodded importantly.

"You could say that again, he's been a handful, this one has."

"I can imagine," Etsuko said, " but, for all his troubles and his faults, he is still my brother." She took a deep, in Hayate's opinion rather theatrical breath. "Is it possible for me to talk to him, alone?"

"Well, that's not standard procedure miss. I am not supposed to leave you here with him."

"Please?" Etsuko pleaded, putting on her sweetest smile. "You could put me in there too, what could possibly happen."

The ninja sighed, rubbing his neck.

"Very well. Five minutes, no more."

He slowely opened the door of the cell, allowing Etsuko to enter. He closed it and left.

"Your brother?" Hayate raised an eyebrow.

"First thing I though of. I could have said girlfriend, but I thought that might bother you more." Etsuko winked at Hayate.

"And now we're both in here. How exactly was this going to help me to get out of here?"

"I hadn't though ahead that far, okay?" Etsuko said, a tone of defiance in her voice. "I though once I got in, the rest would come natural."

"And naturally it's much better to both be in here."

"Alright, alright, I'm sorry!" She turned away, but Hayate saw the sad look on her face. "I thought this would work..."

Hayate sighed.

"Well, it didn't. But don't worry, we'll think of something."

"This would have been a lot easier if I were the damsel in distress..."

"You know what? That might actually work."

"Hey! Guard! Can I get a little help in here?"

"What did you do to her?" the ninja snarled, seeing Etsuko lying on the floor. "Miss," he called, "are you alright?"

"Hey, I didn't do anything. She fainted, just like that. You better get her some help!"

"Step aside, I will examine her."

He never saw it coming...

Rei stirred in her sleep. Exhausted, she had fallen asleep as soon as she lay down, despite the hard wooden floor.

Suddenly she woke up. At first she was unsure what woke her. Her mind still sluggish from sleeping, she looked around drowsily . The forest around her hadn't changed. There was no difference in the sounds. Yet something was different. It felt different, colder.

An eerie blue light was floating over the tea table, slowly growing brighter. Rei wanted to get up, run, but she sat there frozen on the spot.

Suddenly the blue light burst, leaving a tiny trail of stars in it's wake.

The tea table was now engulfed in a white light. Rei watched in horror as the tea set slowly started moving on it's own. What looked like steaming hot tea poured out of the tea pot in two of the cups. But how could there be tea? How could any of this be happening?

Rei opened her mouth to scream, but the sound lay frozen in her throat. She watched silently as one of the cups was lifted in the air.

"It's rude to stare my child. Why don't you join me for a cup of tea? After all, humility is the first step."

- Sorry for taking this long! I left another entry explaining why, so I won't go into that too much here. But anyway, I'm doing much better now :)
- Next chapter will not take this long, I promise!
- However thanks for sticking with me, I really appreciate it! :)
- I will stop rambling now.
- As always, thanks for reading!
ETA: Totally forgot to add this in my ramblings last night. The "hauted" house is by V1ND1CARE @ mts. I just edited it a little bit (added some trees, ivy and a dragon mainly)

I had a load of fun with that particular scene. I was making spooky sounds the whole time XD

Thank you !<3

Ohhh Etsuko I hope this idea of hers works! Its too bad she couldnt come in time to save Daisuke too. :(. does she know, yet?

I am so intrigued by what or who it is Rei found.

I'm also really in love with your pics and imagery. Everything is beautiful, and I'm glad you were able to update. :)
Keoni: sims hayate reikeoni_chan on March 3rd, 2012 05:34 pm (UTC)
No, she doesn't know yet. Hayate will have to tell her soon, though. She's bound to notice Daisuke is not there :(

I'm glad you were intrigued. You'll find out more about what or who it is soon ;) And thank you! You know how I admire your pics, so I'm really glad you like them.

Your pictures are so beautiful! I just kept staring at them :)
I am glad Rei found some decent shelter for the night. When I saw that tea set I hoped their was a mystical reason for it. Those last few frames didn't disappoint.
I loved how Etsuko flirted with the guard to get to Hayate, although she didn't really think it through entirely. Good thing it all worked out. Now he can hopefully catch up to Rei.
Great update. I look forward to more.
Keonikeoni_chan on March 3rd, 2012 05:42 pm (UTC)
Thank you! I realized I had lighting and shadows set to low for all this time. Setting them both on high made a world of difference.
Ah yes, the weird tea set, you'll find out more about that one soon ;)
Thank you! I'm so glad you liked it.

:D Etsuko is a sneaky little thing alright. I love writing her, she has such a fun personality. You'll find out more about the mysterious host soon ;)

Beautiful! Both the pics and the storytelling. Love Etsuko's 'plan' (makes me grin), and I love the spooky stuff.

I hope you're feeling better.
Keonikeoni_chan on March 3rd, 2012 05:47 pm (UTC)
Thank you, I'm really glad you liked it! I had fun thinking of a plan "worthy" of Etsuko, it changed a couple of times while I was writing this chapter.

I am, thank you <3 March is always a better time for me. Funny how feelings can be linked to certain times :)

And here I thought I was moving too slow XD Thank you though, I really appreciate it.

I had so much fun with that chapter. I have all these background stories about them, it was fun to share a few.

Etsu, I like that :) She is adorable though, Rei is far more serious. I can't take too much credit for that haunted dwelling, I just edited it a tiny bit from V1ND1CARE @ mts. (I totally forgot to credit her, I need to fix this).

You have an LJ! I must check it out!
LJ is better for making comments IMO, Tumblr is faster and I love it a lot, but I think LJ is more suitable for this kind of stuff :)
* heads off to your LJ

Intriguing! Your pictures are just so gorgeous. Love the hijinks Etsuko got up to and hope that works out for them. I can't wait to see what happens with Rei at this mysterious tea party.
Keonikeoni_chan on March 4th, 2012 07:37 pm (UTC)
Thank you! :3 Etsuko really means well, she's just an act now, think later girl. It usually works out though.
A/Yesperesa on March 4th, 2012 04:27 pm (UTC)
Oh my. Etsuko must be quite the charmer to have persuaded the goon to even let her into the compound. The tea-spirit thing doesn't really sound malicious at first glance, but ack, you never know!
Keonikeoni_chan on March 4th, 2012 07:42 pm (UTC)
I suspect there was some careful flattering and lots of giggling involved ;) You never know with spirits, but you're right. This one is pretty harmless, for now.
llamastars on March 4th, 2012 04:39 pm (UTC)
I wondered what in the world Etsuko was really planning on doing. XD
Uh oh, scary(?) forest ghost!
<3 the update. ^-^
Keonikeoni_chan on March 4th, 2012 07:45 pm (UTC)
Etsuko is not very good in planning, obviously ;)
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I just read/watch all the chapters of The Dragon Scroll and...
I'm loving it!! The story, your gorgeous sims (I getting a pixel crush on Hayate) and the pictures? Fantastic!
Consider me hooked!

Thank you! :) I'm so glad you're enjoying it, that makes me really happy. Hopefully the next chapter will be out before to long.
Thanks for your comment!

Finally all caught up! I am loving this story so much, I am so impressed by how you can combine the gravitas of Hara kiri with the gentleness of a little boy protecting her friend from monsters at night.

And your pictures are still absolutely stunning!
Keonikeoni_chan on March 12th, 2012 08:27 pm (UTC)
Thank you! That combination was born from my own desire for something sweet. Writing Daisuke's death was very draining for me. I'm glad you think it worked out well.
Rachel: sims brekkejessalie_aranya on March 12th, 2012 07:19 pm (UTC)

And I LOVE the invisible being pouring tea and the mystery it presents. Ninja, ghost, or spirit? ALL ARE POSSIBLE.

Edit: Errr, wrong journal, because I'm an idjit, but anyway. *adds applicable icon* Woo? XD

That was a surprise for me too! You can't tell from Jessie's preview pics either, she had a haistyle that covered her ears.

That mystery will be revealed in the next chapter DunDunDUUNNN XD

and don't sweat it, if I had different journals I would be doing that all the time ;)

I just came across this story and read the whole thing; it's lovely! You really bring the characters and Takemizu to life, and the pictures are simply stunning. I am looking forward to more. :)
