The Dragon Scroll - chapter 4

|| prologue || chapter 1 || chapter 2 || chapter 3 ||

Warnings: None, I've been a good girl

The night was soft and warm, like summer nights tend to be. The air was ringing with the chirping of crickets, the perfect lullaby to Rei. She had always found the sound soothing and relaxing. She smiled and rolled over, slowly giving in to sleep's warm embrace.

She was pulled from her slumber by a soft taping on her door. She pulled herself up, rubbing the sleep out of her eyes. She had a vague idea what that tapping noise might be.

"Rei, are you awake?"

A soft whisper came from the door. Rei smiled and sat up.

"I'm up," she said.

The door opened and Hayate stood there in the doorway.

"What's up?" he said.

Most girls her age would have been alarmed or maybe a bit shy when a boy entered their bedroom in the middle of the night, but this wasn't exactly new. Hayate had been up to her room many times before. He usually stayed until Rei was asleep and left shortly after. Or at least, that's what Rei thought he did. He was never there when she woke up the next morning.

It all had started back when the were kids. Rei was morbidly afraid of the dark back then. She would beg her mother to let her sleep with the candles on, but her mother wouldn't let her. It was a fire hazard, or so mother would say.

So Rei usually sat on her bed, next to a lit candle, until she was too tired to keep her eyes open. She would then blow out the candle, hoping the monsters wouldn't choose that moment to appear, and go to sleep.

Once Hayate found out, instead of mocking her, he climbed through her bedroom window one night and offered to stay to keep the monsters away. Rei gladly accepted and Hayate continued to visit her every now and then ever since.

They would usually just chat, talk about the day and things that had happened. Rei did most of the talking. Once she had asked Hayate if he was boring him, but he has smiled and shook his head, assuring her it was better than sitting at home.

Hayate didn't like to talk about his home. Rei knew he didn't get along very well with his father, who was very strict. Whenever she brought up the subject, Hayate would quickly change the topic.

One night, the subject of his father came up again.

"Won't your father be worried if he checks your room and you're not there?" she had asked.

"My father doesn't care much about anything," Hayate had shrugged, "as long as I keep up my grades and study hard."

Rei had gotten up and had put her hand on his shoulder. He had looked so sad, she had done it without thinking. Hayate had not responded at all, so she had quickly lowered her hand, making a mental note never to bring up the subject again.

"Hey you," Rei said, smiling. "You really shouldn't do this anymore, you know. If they find you here, you'll be in a world of trouble. Samurai in training shouldn't be sneaking around girl's bedrooms in the dead of the night."

"I won't tell, if you won't," Hayate said, winking at Rei. "Anyway, I thought you could use some help warding off the monsters."

Rei giggled.

"The monsters haven't been here since I turned 10, remember? Not counting Daisuke's lame joke of course..."

"I got him back for that," Hayate said, the slightest hint of pride in his voice.

Rei laughed.

"He refused to talk to you for days after that."

"He came around, he always does."

She scooted over, brushing her hair out of her face. "Have a seat."

They spend the rest of the night talking. This would probably be the last time they ever did this, Hayate would be leaving next week. It was another subject Rei avoided. She didn't like to think about it. So she kept the conversation light, keeping to everyday topics.

She didn't remember falling asleep. All she remembered was feeling more peaceful than she ever felt before.

The atmosphere changed. Maybe it was the sound of crickets suddenly disappearing. It somehow felt colder, different. Then, she heard a voice.

"Rei, you need to wake up."

Rei murmered, she was not ready to wake up. In the back of her mind, she recognized the voice. She turned over slowly and opened her eyes.

This was not her bedroom. It took a second for her brain to adjust to the scenery. Clouds were blocking the sun, she could hear birds chirping. The forest, she thought, I'm in the forest.

She sat up and the events from last night came crashing down on her. Her feeling of peace was replaced by a feeling of fear, tightening her stomach. She felt her leg, the scroll tied firmly to it.

She got up, her mind making a list of things she had to do.
Get to the forest, get to Aoimizu, stay of the main roads. And most importantly of all trust, trust that everything was going to be okay, trust that the village would be safe.

It was morning now, surely the fighting wouldn't have lasted all night. But what if Hayate had lost, what if he was ... She shook her head, not allowing her mind to form that sentence. She stood up and tried to get her bearing. It was time to go.

The forest was full of sounds. Every now and then she paused, listening hard. Someone could be following her. She couldn't see anyone, but that didn't mean they weren't there. She stopped to look around.

A sound was moving closer, leaves rustling, twigs creaking while it moved. Rei froze on the spot, panic rising. She tried to think of a plan, she knew that she had to hide. But her feet wouldn't move.

Two chipmunks appeared out of the foliage. They were running left and right, almost as if they were playing a game.

Rei sighed, wiping the cold sweat of her forehead. She needed to stop this, she was going to give herself a heart attack at this rate. She squared her shoulders and moved on.

The sky was darkening and it looked like it was going to rain soon. Rei didn't fancy sleeping out in the rain. She needed to find a shelter for the night and something to eat. She was starting to feel hungry.

"We've searched every house in the village, Sir. This was the last one. There's just no sign of her."

"And you're absolutely sure you saw a girl leave last night?"

"Positive, there's not a doubt in my mind!"

"Fine. Gather the men. We head for the forest. We will find that girl."

"What about our prisoner, Sir? Should we finish him before we leave?"

"No, let him sit there a little longer. I'll deal with him when we get back."

Girl? What girl?

+ I really wanted to do a bit of Rei's backstory, so I hope you enjoyed it.
+ Some lighter stuff this time, I had loads of fun with little Rei and little Hayate :)
+ Isn't Daisuke's dragon outfit (by Trapping) precious? XD It's not really period appropriate, but so cute.
+ Cut text is from Memories by Within Temptation

Rei and Hayate back story was so sweet. It is obvious how much he cares for her and her him. I thought his home life was interesting. I wonder if that will affect anything later. Is his father still around, etc.?
Maybe with the men leaving the look for "the girl" someone can find a way to get Hayate out of his cell.
So exciting!

I'm glad you enjoyed it! :) I will go on a bit about Hayate's home life and his dad in another chapter, but I can't reveal too much about that yet ;)

Thank you :) I wanted to make the flashback sort of dreamy, so I used a different style from my "normal" pictures. I'm glad you like it!

I just recently found this, I love it! :)
I love that it's "based" off the maxis story, and the sets are so so pretty.
