The Dragon Scroll - Chapter 3

|| prologue || chapter 1 || chapter 2 ||

Warnings: some coarse language, violence, reference to ritual suicide

The cell was cold and damp. The small barred window offered a view of the surrounding hills, but nothing more. It was impossible to tell what was going on outside.

After being interrogated, Hayate and Daisuke had been brought to the cell. Daisuke hadn't spoken since they got there. He just sat there, staring to the ground. His breathing was shallow and he had winced quite a few times. Hayate had asked him if he was okay, but Daisuke had just waved his hand, indicating he didn't want to talk about it.

Figures, Hayate thought, staring at the moonlit hills. Daisuke always acted tougher than he actually was. Still, he was worried about Daisuke, his injuries didn't look that bad, but it was impossible to tell how damaged he was on the inside. He had learned that much during training.

The door of their cell slid open with a rattling sound. Daisuke just sat there, displaying no signs that he had heard it. Two ninja walked in, accompanied by the man they had met earlier.

"Which one?"

"Let's continue with our friend, I'm sure he'll be feeling more talkative right now," the man said.

"He needs to rest," Hayate said, "Weren't you just dying to break me? Why don't you take on someone your own size?"

It only took him two steps to get to Hayate. Hayate felt his fingers close around his neck like iron bands, lifting him off his feet. Hayate gasped and spluttered, trying to loosen the grip around his throat.

"You have no idea who your dealing with," the man said softly, a clear threat in his voice.

"So why don't you tell me?" Hayate forced out.

"Wouldn't you like to know," the man said with a slight smile. "But knowing my name won't do you any good, and it won't safe your village." He slowly lowered Hayate to the ground.
"But don't worry, once it's your turn, I'll tell you. I wouldn't want you to curse the wrong name when I leave you on the floor, bleeding like a pig."

"You better remember your place, little man."

The man left, slamming the cell door behind him.

"Oh yeah? Give me back my sword and I'll show you which one of us is a little man!"

" Hayate, is that you in there?" A voice, hardly louder than a whisper came from the window.

"Etsuko?"

Etsuko's head appeared behind the small barred window.
"I thought I recognized your dulcet tones," she giggled. "Are you okay?"

"Aside from being locked up, you mean?"

"Aw come one, don't be like that."

"Anyway, I'm going to get you out," Etsuko said. "But you'll have to be a bit patient, it'll have to wait 'till morning. Can you hold it out that long?"

'Yeah, no problem. But you shouldn't Etsuko. Whatever you're planning is way to dangerous."

"Don't you worry about that. I've got the perfect plan. They won't know what hit them. Well, see you tomorrow!"

"Etsuko! No!" Hayate hissed, but she had already gone.

Oh great, he though, another one of Etsuko's perfect plans...

A noise distacted him. It sounded like a muffled cry, or maybe a groan, coming from behind the door at the end of the hallway. They must have started interrogating. He moved closer to the bars, listening hard. But he couldn't hear anything else.

He knew Daisuke would not talk, he was prepared to stake his life on that. But he was worried. How far would they go?

"I'm going to ask you one more time. Where is the scroll?"

Daisuke coughed, spitting blood on the floor.

"I... don't... know," he said.

"Liar," one of the ninja hissed, kicking him in the head, "you know! And your going to tell us!"

They were hitting every inch they could reach. At first he had felt pain, but now he seemed to go numb. His breathing became more difficult, a stinging pain in his chest everytime he tried to draw breath. The room was swimming around him, going slightly darker with every blow. If only he could hold on a little longer...

"Is he dead?" One of the ninja poked Daisuke with his foot.

"Take him to his cell."

"Yes Sir. Do you want us to bring the other one?"

"No, not yet. Summon the others, I need to talk to them.'

"As you wish, Sir"

They left and returned shortly afterwards, acompanied by four others. They all stood in the room, watching silently.

"I'm sure you all know why I called you here. We still haven't got the scroll."

A few ninja moved uncomfortably, looking everywhere but at him.

"I was told it would be easy and yet I stand here, with no scroll. How is this possible?"

"Maybe the girl...?"
"Shhhhhh!"

"What girl?"

The ninja stood before him, wringing his hands nervously. He looked at the other ninjas, his eyes begging for help. The other ninjas just looked away. It was always a bad idea to anger their master, they knew that much.

With enormous effort, he looked up to his master.

"Well... it's probably nothing..."

"Speak!"

"There was this girl, a young girl, no older than 18 I think."

"And?" He crossed his arms, his fingers tapping impatiently on his arm.

"I saw her running out the gate. She was the only one that got away."

He stepped closer to the ninja, his voice was like a deadly whisper.

"Where did she go?"

"I'm not sure, Sir. she could be heading for the forest. But maybe she just went home, Sir."

"Take him," he said to another ninja, "take him and check out every house in this village. If you can't find her before daybreak, were heading for the forest."

They had dumped Daisuke in the cell and just left. Daisuke had crawled up to the wall and just sat there, for how long Hayate didn't know, but it seemed like hours. The moon had already dropped behind the hills. Dawn was coming. Daisuke hadn't spoken a word and Hayate hadn't dared to speak.

Finally Daisuke moved.

"Hayate," he groaned, "where are you? I can't see you."

Hayate crouched down by his side.

"I'm right here," he said softly, touching Daisuke's shoulder, "how are you?"

"How do I look? Is it... bad?"

Hayate looked at his friend, Daisuke's face was swollen, blood was leaking steadily from his nose. Daisuke coughed, spraying the floor with even more blood. His right hand lay numb at his side, in an odd angle. It was hard to find any part of him that looked normal.

"Nothing too bad," Hayate lied, "You'll be out chasing pretty girls in no time."

Daisuke laughed and winced.

"You're a horrible liar, do you know that? Always have been." He sighed. "You know there is almost no greater dishonor than being caught?"

"I know"

"Most of us make sure it doesn't come to that... But I don't think I have the strength for that anymore."

Hayate felt a cold rush over him, it was like his insides were turning to ice.

"Don't worry, we'll be fine. Etsuko was just here and..."

"I can feel the darkness creeping closer. It will be here soon, but maybe not soon enough. Not for me. Hayate... I want you to help me end it."

Hayate jumped up, looking shocked.

"No! I won't do it!" Hayate began pacing the room, his mind working franticly. There had to be another way, there just had to be. "You just have to hold on a little longer. You're stronger than this!"

"Hayate, listen to me." Daisuke sat up a little straighter, with difficulty. He looked in Hayate's direction, but he could tell Daisuke couldn't see him.
"We promised, remember? When we started our training, you would have my back and I would have yours." Daisuke took a deep breath, wincing again. "Right now, I'm asking you to have my back. I can't do this myself, not anymore."

Hayate sighed, running his hand through his hair.

"I don't like this," he said.

"I know you don't. But my end is coming, whether you like it or not. All I'm asking you is to help me end it with honor."

"We don't have a knife," Hayate said in a flat voice. "There's no way we can do this without a knife."

"I have one," Daisuke said, "they just took my sword, they didn't search any further."

"Daisuke..."

"Please," Daisuke said, his eyes filling with tears, "this will be the last thing I will ever ask of you. I don't think I can take anymore. If I'd crack and tell them all, I could never forgive myself." He looked at Hayate, imploringly, "Please don't let me go through that. Please spare me that shame."

Hayate crouched down at his side, his shaking hands taking the knife Daisuke was offering to him. Daisuke smiled at him, then closed his eyes.

"Goodbye, old friend... "

Goodbye, Daisuke

-----------------------------------------------
Notes:
- le sigh...
- Anyway, if there are any doubts, Hayate did indeed help Daisuke "end it with honor". I just didn't want to go all graphic and bloody on you guys.
- No Rei in this chapter, she's sleeping under a tree right now anyway. Didn't feel right to wake her up :)
- Cut text is from Shape of my Heart by Sting, which gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.
- And incidentally was also the song that was on auto-repeat when I wrote the last scene.
- So if that scene sucks monkeyballs, blame the song XD
- Lastly, this chapter was out way faster than the other ones. I had a few days off and nothing to do. Staring next week however, normal life will resume and I'll have about one night a week to sim. I'm still doing the BACC and I can't put that on hiatus because of the round robin. (might do it after my turn is over though)
So I think it'll be one chapter a month again.

As always, thanks for reading!

Rei, Rei, watch out for the bad guys. :c they're coming for you~

Poor Etsuko, preparing all night and then discovering she only has one person to rescue. :C RIP, Daisuke. Hayate, you're on your own now.
Keonikeoni_chan on January 7th, 2012 11:26 pm (UTC)
*nods* It's a pretty big forest and she got a head start, but still Rei should be careful.
Etsuko will get quite the nasty surprise when she comes back. That's for sure.
Lissiedawntreadings on January 6th, 2012 09:55 pm (UTC)
Aww look at them all beat up :( I wasn't too fond of Daisuke before this chapter and then you killed him and I was SHOCKED AND APPALLED. But in a good way.

Also lol that derpy ninja! And the one in the third picture on the left is just like, when's my coffee break?
Keoni: sims llamakeoni_chan on January 7th, 2012 11:29 pm (UTC)
Blood makes me kind of icky, I really had a hard time messing them up. I was afraid, because Daisuke's roll isn't that big, that his death would have no reaction at all, so I'm glad you were shocked. (that sounds so wrong XD)

It's just business as usual for the ninja :)

<3 Really loved reading this. Daisuke's death was heartbreaking :(

I started reading your story today. It's so beautiful. The story, the scenery and the characters are all amazing. I'll be looking forward to the next update.

Thank you! I'm so glad you liked it. It makes me really happy to hear that :)

Nooo, Daisuke. : ( And Hayate's going to have to be in that cell for a while with his dead friend, too. Egads, poor thing!
And Etsuko - I've no idea what she thinks she's doing, but it doesn't look like it would end well.
Keonikeoni_chan on January 7th, 2012 11:31 pm (UTC)
That actually creeped out more than the whole seppuku thing. Having to sit there in that cell all night after that, ugh.
Etsuko is one of those girls with great ideas, that never go as she planned :)

Aww Daisuke :/ I was really rooting for him, but that shows how much he truely loves his village. To be able to with stand all of those beatings and say nothing takes a true warrior, but that was slowly slipping away...

Awwww crap, they're out looking for Rei...Wonder if they find her..

Oh Etsuko..I wonder what she has up her long sleeves! lol

Can't wait for the next chapter :)
Keonikeoni_chan on January 7th, 2012 11:33 pm (UTC)
Daisuke was a true warrior, just more introvert than Hayate, who is a bit of a show-off :) Writing that scene was hard, I felt so sorry for him.
Thank you! <3

You are an amazing writer and you have such a great imagination! Poor Daiskue.... (;_;) Even though he was only in the story for so long he's such a great character.
Keoni: sims ninjakeoni_chan on January 7th, 2012 11:35 pm (UTC)
Aw, thank you so much! *blushes
I'm so glad you liked it. I felt so sorry for Daisuke after that scene, it was hard to put him through all that.

You were right, that icon is appropriate :D
I couldn't have done, even if I wanted it. Blood makes me woozy, I can hardly stand looking at those icons in CAS.

You know those girl that go "Guys! I have this great idea!" which is never that great in the end? That's Etsuko :)
Alleliua: blanketsalleliua on January 7th, 2012 03:39 am (UTC)
Oh, Daisuke :(

I hope Rei stays safe! And Etsuko, what are you up to... this can't end well.
Keonikeoni_chan on January 7th, 2012 11:38 pm (UTC)
Rei will need some help, that's for sure. Etsuko's plan might work, but it depends on a lot of things ;)
blackdaisiessimtopi on January 7th, 2012 06:13 am (UTC)
Is it weird that I totally have a villain crush on your evil dude. :O

I really loved this, especially Etsuko gleefully thinking up a cunning plan to get them out. I do feel so bad for Hayate having to help Daisuke this way. :( I'm so looking forward to the next chapter, I love how well you hook us in! Great storytelling!
Keoni: sims cowplantkeoni_chan on January 7th, 2012 11:41 pm (UTC)
Nope, not at all :D I have a ridiculous amount of fun writing him, though his perma-frown causes me to have a lot of trouble taking good pictures.

I felt pretty bad after that scene. All my usual writing has been kind of fluff and sweet up to this point. I don't like dealing with death, but sometimes you just can't avoid it, I guess.
Thank you so much! <3

Villains who whisper threats are always the scary ones. :/

Poor Daisuke! And Poor Hayate for having to help him.

I hope Etsuko saves the day, but somehow I don't think it's going to end well...
Keoni: sim dogkeoni_chan on January 7th, 2012 11:44 pm (UTC)
It always creeps me out when villains whisper, somehow everything sounds worse.
I felt so bad for Daisuke, but everything was sort of building up towards one of them dying and I felt I couldn't take the cheap way out :)

ah, Etsuko and her plans *laughs
skellington7dskellington7d on January 8th, 2012 02:48 am (UTC)
Nooooooooooooooo! D:

Sad stuff, Keoni. But riveting. I can't wait to see what Etsuko is up to, and what happens with Rei!
Keonikeoni_chan on January 10th, 2012 10:28 pm (UTC)
It was pretty sad, I had a hard time writing this one. I'm glad you found it riveting though! The next chapter will be more cheerful :)
chickadeeleechickadeelee on January 11th, 2012 04:20 pm (UTC)
So sad about Daisuke, but understandable. He didn't want to give everything away and that is very honorable. I bet the mean man isn't going to be happy about it though! Wonder what Etsuko has up her sleeve for their escape!
Keoni: sim ghostkeoni_chan on January 11th, 2012 06:56 pm (UTC)
Daisukue was really on the breaking point. Still, it made me kind of sad to write this.
I reckon that mean guy is going to be really pissed XD (I should really find an excuse to write his name though, haha).
olivethegreatolivethegreat on January 13th, 2012 09:42 pm (UTC)
Poor Daisuke. :( He seemed like he was in a lot of pain though.
Hopefully Rei can get away safely!
Keonikeoni_chan on January 29th, 2012 06:54 pm (UTC)
Sorry for the late reply, I totally missed your comment!
I did feel really sad after finishing this chapter, but hopefully the next one will be a little more cheerful :)
