The Dragon Scroll - chapter 2

|| prologue || chapter 1 ||

Warnings: some coarse language, violence, reference to ritual suicide.

Rei felt her stomach drop. She turned away trying to control the feeling of panic rising up.
Hayate and Daisuke's voices came drifting towards her, sounding distant like a badly tuned radio. She couldn't quite make out what they were saying, but Daisuke sounded agitated.

"I've been looking all over for you! And then I come here to find you... fooling around with some girl!"

"I wasn't fooling around and Rei is not some girl!" Hayate growled, "And it's not like it's any of your business anyway."

"It is when our village is in danger!"

"And how exactly could I know we would be attacked right now?""

"Guys, stop it. Please?"

They both looked at her.

"You stay out of this," Daisuke said

Rei took a deep breath, steadying herself.

"No. I won't. You two need to stop fighting and get out there."

"All those people outside..." Her voice died away, she suddenly realized Etsuko was still out there.
"Hayate, you need to go now! Etsuko..."

"It's going to be okay, Rei, don't worry. We'll do anything to keep the village safe."

Rei sniffed, trying very hard not to cry.

"Hey, come on. You really think I'm going to let anything happen to Takemizu? Or to Etsuko? You know me better than that."

Rei smiled, despite of herself.

"I know you won't," she said softly.

"Daisuke and I are going to go out there and kick some ninja ass. We'll be back before you know it."

"She can't stay here," Daisuke said quietly to Hayate

"And why the hell not?"

"For all we know, their target could be in this very building. Maybe even something in this room. It's not safe here, Hayate."

"She sure as hell isn't going out there!"

"Well, we seem to have a problem then..."

At that moment, the door slid open. Takeshi, the school's sword master walked in, looking worried.

"Ah, good. You're both here. They're after the scroll! We need to take it somewhere safe"
He looked around the room, his eyes falling in Rei.
"What's she doing here?"

Daisuke smirked.

"Long story," he said, nudging Hayate.

Takeshi shrugged.

"She'll do."

Hayate looked at his master in disbelieve.

"You're not impying...?"

"Why not? You're both needed to defend the village. Let the girl hide the scroll"

"Master, no! I must insist..."

Rei stepped forward, her face set.

"I'll hide it," she said, a little more confident than she felt.

"No Hayate, he's right. Who else is there?"

"Very well, " Takeshi said. "Take off your kimono."

"Wait... What?" Rei stared at Takeshi in confusion.

"Don't worry, young lady. We just need to conceal the scroll. If they see you walking down the street with it, they'll be after you in no time. The scroll won't fit in you obi and your not wearing a furisode so you can't conceal it in your sleeves. I'll just strap it to your leg, but it's a bit hard to do with all those layers of clothing. So it's better to take them off"

Hayate and Daisuke turned away, as Takeshi helped Rei with her kimono.

"Now just hold still," Takeshi said, "This won't take long."

"Hey Hayate, you sure they don't need your help?"

"Shut up, Daisuke."

"We're done," Takeshi said. "Time to go." Daisuke followed him outside, his face set and his sword drawn. Rei wanted to follow, but her feet wouldn't move. Hayate was waiting by her side.

"Are you ready?" he asked her.

"I think so," Rei said. "I know I'm the only one who can take the scroll to Aiomizu..." She let out a nervous giggle. "I guess I'm just scared."

"It's going to be okay, trust me."

Rei nodded nervously and followed Hayate outside.

Fear constricted her throat when he saw what was going on outside. Fire was blazing everywhere and most of the villagers were running around, shouting in terror.

"Rei," Hayate said, "when I say it, run. Run and don't look back. Head for the forest, it's safer than the main roads."

Rei nodded again, unable to speak.

"Okay," he said and took a deep breath. "Go!"

Rei bolted down the steps and onto the square, as Hayate advanced on the ninja closest to him. The smoke irritated her eyes and made it hard to breathe, but she kept running, her feet pounding on the stone slaps.

Head to the forest, don't look back. Head to the forest, don't look back. Head to the forest, don't look back. The words kept repeating in her head, like a mantra, while she dodged the fighting and the flames all around her.

The villagers were trying to fight the best they could, but very few of them were trained for battle. How could they possibly win?

Etsuko tried to keep her assaulter at bay by throwing everything she could reach at him. Rei desperately wanted to stop, to help her. But she kept running, the gate of the village was close. She prayed to the ancestors Hayate could keep his promise and keep Etsuko safe.

Hayate tried his best, but there were just too many of them. As he pinned one of them to the ground, he heard a scream behind him. As he turned to look, he saw Hikari fall to one of the ninja.

As he looked back, three more ninja had advanced to him. He heard Daisuke shout something at him and suddenly he was there by side.

"How many are the anyway?"

"I don't know! It's hard to keep track, they all look the same!" Hayate shouted.

But Daisuke was already injured and no match for the ninja. He crumpled to the ground as one of the ninja hit him in the chest.

A little bit further away, Takashi was floored by two others. Hayate was the only one left.

"Give it up, boy. There's no way you can win!"

Rei had reached the torii gate that marked the entrance to the village. She ran through it, out into the open fields. The forest wasn't far, if she could only make it to the edge...

"Should I get her?"

"Nah, let her go. The master has summoned us. Let's go see what he has to say."

"Very well."

His armed pinned behind his back, locked in an iron grip, Hayate was dragged to the door.

"Sir, this is the last one."

"Bring him in."

The door slid open and Hayate was pushed through hard. He fell to the ground. A man was standing there, his back turned, as though they were not worthy of his attention.
Daisuke was already there, looking utterly defeated.

"Who is this guy?" Hayate asked Daisuke quietly.

Daisuke didn't answer.

"Get up," the man ordered Hayate, "at least act like you know how to behave in front of a superior."

"You are not my superior!"

"Yet I'm not the one crawling in the dust. Now get up."

"What do you want?"

"The Dragon Scroll, but I'm sure you already know that. Don't you play dumb with me" the man said, sounding bored, "I know it's here, I just don't where. You two are going to tell me."

"I'll never tell you where it is."

"Funny, your friend said that too. But you'll be feeling more cooperative soon, don't you worry." He looked at Daisuke, who was looking at the floor, "Your friend there is awfully quiet, he already got a little taste of it." The man shrugged. "One of you is bound to crack sooner or later."

He turned his head a little to face him. Hayate could see he was smiling at him. It wasn't a happy smile, he was mocking him.

"Or maybe," the man said, "maybe I should let you both go. You've failed your village, your master is dead. There is no higher dishonor. He laughed. "Don't you samurai have a very effective way of dealing with dishonor?"

Hayate said nothing, he just sat there, grinding his teeth.

"All you two have to decide is which one of you will slit the other one's throat. There's no need to make this unnecessary painful for both of you." The man laughed again.

"Fair enough," Hayate said. Daisuke looked at him in shocked disbelieve. "But did you actually get the scroll?"

"Not yet..."

Hayate smiled, waves of relieve washing over him. Rei made it out.

"So we didn't fail. You did."

At the edge of the forest, Rei looked at the village one last time. She could see the smoke rising up from the buildings and the orange glow of fires still burning. She looked around, her eyes following the slopes of the hills and the fields she just passed. It seemed like nobody was following her. The were no groups traveling through the fields, no signs of a search being organized. She sighed, the knot in her stomach untying just a little.

Straightening her shoulders, Rei moved her gaze away from the village. It was time to go on.

Author's notes:
- I'm never ever doing anything with fire again! It was so hard to keep it under control.
- Hayate looks slightly more roughed up in that last scene than he did in the fighting scenes. It's not a continuity error. Let's just say he's not the type to come quietly :)
- When the unfriendly fellow in the room is referring to an "effective way to deal with dishonor", he's referring to ritual suicide, or Hara-kiri. (Or Seppuku) The dishonored samurai would cut open his belly. Usually, after he's done that, another one would slit his throat, to spare the samurai a slow and very painful dead. I could go on and on about it, but I guess you're not here for a history lesson :) *takes off scolar hat
- Speaking of the unfriendly one, he's indeed the same guy as the one of the prologue. He's just all dressed up now, because he's out and about.
- Cut text references "Everything Burns" by Ben Moody and Anastasia. An oldie, but I like it

Good grace, your pictures are fantastic. The posing, the expressions, it's just all so spot-on and lively.
I'm guessing it's not going to end well for Hayate and Daisuke, however, especially with that last admission. D: Poor Rei, left practically alone now.
Keonikeoni_chan on December 31st, 2011 03:14 pm (UTC)
Thank you! I'm glad to posing came out nice, I was afraid it would seem "unnatural".
Hayate and Daisuke are in a world of trouble, but he needs them alive, for now at least ;)

Fantastic! I loved the action in this chapter and all the little details and world-building you've put into this. Takimazu really seems like a real place now! I'm eager to see what happens to Rei and how her character will develop.

Were you using real fire? These fire effects are much easier to control!

Thank you! :D I hate "Takemizu, the tourist trap" in BV. It could have been awesome, but I always felt something was missing.

Oh! That link is so helpful! I wish I had it when I was shooting this. I was using real fire, so I almost burned down the village about twelve times XD Those effects will really come in handy in the next chapters, thank you!

Brilliant Brilliant Brillaint! That right scene was intense! I was kinda scared that Hayate was going to get killed! Poor Rei! I now wonder what the future hold for her. Will she stumble upon another village? Who knows this is great and I love where this is heading! Pictures and posing we're amazing as usual !
Ps. I'm a history freak do I loved the little ritual suicide piece :p

Can't wait for more

This was amazing. I really love your pics and your posing. And Rei and Hayate are cute together. I'm worried about Etsuko, but it seems like she's handling things ok on her own.. I was chering for her. Hopefully Rei can make it out with the scroll.

Thank you! <3
Etsuko is pretty tough, I had fun setting her shot up. Like Hayate, Etsuko is not someone to go down without a fight :)

What a treat to see an update!
Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time. It must be fate that put Rei in that room right then. She certainly has a very big responsibility now.
I hope that Hayate and Daisuke get out of their seemingly hopeless situation. Rei will need help in her "quest" and who better than the samurai that loves her ;)
Great update, well worth the wait.

Thank you! :) I'm so glad you enjoyed it.
Rei has quite a journey ahead of her and she'll certainly need all the help she can get ;)

I have totally fallen in love with your story! The battle scenes were amazing! I bet the fire was really hard to work with, but man it sure did look awesome. You got some great fighting poses there. It all worked wonderfully. I absolutely cannot wait for the next update!

Thank you! :D
I nearly burned down the entire village, which was of course what was actually happening in the story, but everyone kept catching on fire XD I had to quit without saving quite a few times.
I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Sure, give the girl the scroll and let her run off with it.
Besides, no one would ever suspect a thing!
Once again, another great chapter. Definitely kept me on the edge of my seat!
I'm definitely looking forward to the next one.

It was either let her take the scroll, or give her a sword XD
Thank you! I'm really happy you liked it :)

Wow! This is such an exciting start! :D I already like Hayate, haha! He's so cheeky and his mind moves pretty fast! ;) I wonder if he can talk his way out though; angering that man didn't seem like a good thing to do.

Poor Rei, all alone. :( I hope the dragon scroll gets hidden safely. (I can't believe nobody had the itch to read it though! :P)
Keonikeoni_chan on January 2nd, 2012 09:30 pm (UTC)
Thank you!
Hayate is a bit too cheeky for his own good, he'd better learn to count to ten around that man ;)
If I were Rei, I would have read it by now XD But there's a big seal on it, so it's pretty hard to hide the fact you've been reading it.
