The Dragon Scroll - Chapter 1

|| prologue ||

Warnings: Teen (18)/YA (21) getting close to first base, some slapping and a very small amount of blood.

It was the evening of the Dragon Festival. The whole village came to the town square to celebrate their victory over Aoimizu, over 300 years ago.

Local shopkeepers set up stalls and traveling salesmen came to sell their goods. They mostly sold earthenware and fabrics, luxury items for the townspeople.

One of the highlights of the festival was a martial arts demonstration. The local samurai in training would show their skills to the people. Back in the day, Takemizu had an impressive military force, but decades of peace had made that quite unnecessary. These days the school only had a handful of students.

"So, what do you want to do first? We could check out the ramen shop, they've got this new recipe I've been dying to try."

" I don't know," said Rei, "I really wanted to check out those dolls. Chiyo's birthday is coming up soon."

"Oh, check it out! Hayate is back. Hey, Hayate!" Etsuko shouted, waving wildly.

It was one of those times Rei would have liked to be a ninja. Sudden disappearance would have been bliss. She hoped for a brief moment he wouldn't notice them. But he did, Etsuko had a way of being noticed, and grin spreading across his face. Rei felt her face burn as Etsuko dragged her by her arm.

She didn't like to think back to the day he left, almost four years ago. Hayate had wanted to become a samurai for as Rei could remember. The local school could only train aspiring samurai to a certain level. They were then sent to a sword master, who lived far away, to complete their training.

Rei had broken down completely when Hayate left. Etsuko had been kind enough to direct Daisuke's attention away, while Rei sobbed uncontrollably unto Hayate's shoulder.

He was one of her oldest friends and she had hoped he might become something more than that, one day. But her feelings were confusing and she never got the chance to tell him how she felt.

"Wow, look at you, all grown up" said Etsuko, "I haven't seen you in ages! How long have you been back then?"

"We arrived this morning. We'll be staying for about a week and then we're moving out again."

"We?" Estuko asked, "Who else is back?"

"It's just me and Daisuke," Hayate said.

During their conversation, Rei tried desperately to think of something witty or interesting to say, but her mind was drawing a blank. Cursing silently, she just stood there and smiled, hoping she didn't look too much like an idiot.

"Well, we've got to get going," she heard Etsuko say, "Talk to you later!"

Grateful to leave the scene, Rei turned to walk away when she heard Hayate's voice.

"Rei?"

She turned back to face him.

"It's great to see you again," Hayate said, "How have you been?"

"Oh me? I've been fine," she said.

"We'll be doing a demonstration later on. Maybe I'll see you there?"

"Oh yeah, sure. Wouldn't miss it."

Blabbering idiot, she thought walking back to Etsuke. Wouldn't miss it... way to seem desperate.

"Hayate seemed pleased to see you again," Etsuko said, nudging her.

"Oh, shut up."

The demonstration was held in front of the local dojo. The master introduced his students one by one.

"Let the demonstration begin!"
Hayate and Daisuke took their bow and assumed position.

"Pretty cool, huh?"

Etsuko always loved the demonstration. Rei didn't really care for it. She usually just went to accompany Etsuko. She remembered Hayate's last performance, four years back.

Overly enthusiastic, determined to show off all he had learned before he left, Hayate had almost sliced off on Daisuke's nose. Daisuke had retaliated, slashing Hayate's cheek. It was the only time in the history of Takemizu the demonstration had been cut short.

"And now, please welcome Hikari and Osamu."

"Oh look, Hikari's up! Etsuko said.

"You should cheer him on" Rei said with a smile.

Etsuko elbowed her way through the crowd. Cheering loudly for her little brother, she made it to the front of the crowd in seconds.

Rei just stood there, watching the two boys preform. They clearly still had a lot to learn.

"I don't think I was that bad when I was their age..." a voice said behind her.

She smiled. "Yes you were, Hayate. Your teacher said you had trouble "finding your center", remember?"

"Nah, I don't remember him ever saying that," Hayate said, grinning. "Hey, you wanna get out of here?"

"To do what exactly?"

"Well, want to see something cool?"

Rei raised an eyebrow.
"Like what?" she asked suspiciously

"It's a secret," Hayate said winking.

She followed him to the back room of the main dojo.

"This better not be some weird real-life three legged frog."
She heard him laugh as he opened a door.

"I can't believe you remember that."

"How could I forget?"

He led her to a brightly lit room.
"Well this is it. The elders call it The Dragon Scroll."

"A scroll? What's so cool about this?" Rei asked, folding her arms.

"It's very special, even the elders are not allowed to read it. They say it was brought her many years ago by a young woman. Nobody knows who she was. The elders believe the scroll brings good fortune and it's the reason we've been living in peace for so long."

"And you believe that?"

"I don't really know what to believe," Hayate said softly. "When you see what the war has done to the villages around us, you can't help but think some sort of luck was involved. Maybe it was the scroll, maybe not."

He just sat there, smiling to himself. Getting in had been too easy. Now all he had to do was wait. He watched the display on the stage. The pride of the village, he sneered. The scroll was as good as their's.

He stood up. It was time.

"So you brought me here to look at some scroll?"

"Yes," Hayate said, "and to talk to you. I've missed you, Rei..."

She had wanted to hear those words, but found it hard to believe him. Hayate had always liked to joke with her.
"Yeah right," she said, trying to keep her face straight and her voice steady.

Hayate smiled at her. There was something about his smile that made her unsteady on her feet. She felt her heart pounding against her chest. She took a deep breath.
"Well, thank you for showing me this," she said, with a slight quiver in her voice, "but, being a secret scroll and all, I reckon you'll be in a world of trouble if they find us here. So maybe we should go?"

In one fluent movement he was behind her, his arms closing around her waist. Rei felt the blood rushing to her cheeks.

"How did you do that?" she gasped.

"What? You think ninjas are the only ones with smooth tricks?"

Hayate slowly pulled her closer. Part of her wanted to run, part of her wanted wanted to giggle. But instead she closed her eyes, feeling Hayate's breath on her skin.

With a loud bang, the door opened. Hayate let Rei go instantly. Feeling confused, Rei saw Daisuke standing in the door, his face covered in... Was that blood?

"There you are!" he shouted at Hayate, "You need to come. Now!"

"Why? What's wrong?"

"We're under attack!"

Author's notes:
+ Bigger pictures ftw!
+ I like putting ninja on high places for my teasers, obviously XD
+ Rei is and aged down version of Juliette by lovelyxwow. Her name actually reflects this, Rei means lovely in Japanese :)
+ On that note, Etsuko means joy, Daisuke means warrior and Hayate means smooth or hurricane (which makes me giggle everytime I type it, smooth hurricane XD) I tried to have their names reflect bits of their characters.
+ And while we're on the subject aoi means blue and mizu means water, so Aoimizu would be something like Bluewater. (Bluewater village, winkwink)
+ This chapter was a lot of setting up and dialogue, but the next one will hopefully be more action packed
+ Cut-text is from Enter the Ninja by Die Antwoord
+ As always, thanks for reading!

It's definitely very different from doing a BACC, because usually I just let my sims do all the work ;)

I love this so much! I really liked the flow of this and the writing wasn't at all awkward like most sims stories slip into. Hayate is super qt and Rei is so pretty!
I especially like her expression in this picture.
I don't even remember the story of the scroll and I'm not going to look it up~ I'd rather wait for your story's canon tbh.
Am I right in taking this as present day Takemizu?
Keoni: sims lion2keoni_chan on December 4th, 2011 11:59 am (UTC)
Thank you, it makes me so happy to hear that! :D
Rei is so pretty and it's very easy to get good expressions one her.
The story takes place in old Takemizu, it's actually a legend that's told by the hermit on the secret lot. I've always loved that bit of the game.

You're pictures are stunning. Seriously, they're so crisp and lovely, I could stare at them all day. It was really interesting to read the little tidbits behind the names; you've obviously put a lot of thought into this. The demonstration scenes were cool, and Hikari and Osamu awkwardness made me giggle. Looking forward to reading the next chapter, it looks like something big is about to go down!

WOW.

HOLY--COW.
Seriously, it's been ages since I've seen a real cool story based on Asia with actual substance--and it's really refreshing to see such an exotic theme! I really love the characters, and the suspenseful narrative is just perfect! It's an insta-bookmarking moment right there, can't wait to see what happens next!
